I want to simply state a fact...I offer 1 hour lessons and have 3 package options available for people in various stages of their driving experience:

* 1.5 hour lessons for very advanced drivers who needs to unlearn old habits and learn new K53 habits in a very short period of time. This can be achieved in 6hrs or less. They will have to work harder and faster than other learners, the choice is theirs.

* 12 hours subdivided into 8 X 1.5hr lessons for reasonably good drivers who needs to unlearn old habits and learn new K53 habits. This is necessary otherwise they WILL fail the test.

* 18 hours subdivided into 12 X 1.5hr lessons for not so advanced drivers who is in the formation stage of his/her driving experience and most probably learning the parents/friends old and bad habits. This can be rectified in a relatively short period in order to pass the test.

* 24 hours subdivided into 16 X 1.5hr lessons for the new learner with NO driving skills at all. I start from the bottom...teaching every single aspect of the car and driving in order to keep them safe on the roads in future.

Every learner is different to the next, not ALL learners are able to learn as quickly or in as short time period as others.

What really frightens me is: too many instructors advise otherwise to "get" a learner to sign up with their driving school for only a few lessons with a "promise" that the learner WILL be driving and "PASS" the test but when the test comes the learner FAILS with "flying colors".

A few learners from other driving schools have joined my school in the past claiming that the instructor told them to "pretend" doing their observations, learners who were days away from their test that could NOT do an emergency stop, hand signs, incline pull away, do observations in a timely fashion in order to get the turn done without elevating onto the side walk...things like that.

Not only will the learner FAIL but the testing officer will ask me: "how many lessons did this learner do?". This is a bad reflection on Polka Dot Driving School.

Do understand that I don't have a 100% pass rate but I do have a 95% pass rate. I teach slower but more hands-on than other driving schools, I am a "fully involved with my learner" instructor, very patient, calm and relaxed when teaching. I bring my learners attention to every little thing that I believe will make the difference between them being a good driver and being an excellent driver. I do all this in the most pleasant and fun way possible and find this the reason for my learners fast progress.

Learners fail for various reasons:

* The No:1 test failer - NERVES - the learner is soo nervous & frightened that the leg shivers so badly that they can't do clutch control at all. This is when the car stalls and rolls resulting in an immediate FAIL!!!

* The No:2 test failer - OBSERVATIONS - the learner neglects to do many of the observations needed which in return causes them to loose points and results in a FAIL!!!.

* The No:3 test failer - SEQUENCE - every maneuver is done in a certain sequence that the learner is evaluated by the test officer. Sequences not done correctly results in point loss, possibly also stall and roll and then FAIL!!!.

I teach driving lessons with ONLY 1 purpose in mind and that is to get alert, conscientious, safe and happy rivers on our roads. The reason for this is: "2 of my children were killed in 2 different MVA's and this changes my whole view on the subject of driving! Not only am I an alert, conscientious and safe driver, I am very passionate about teaching and absolutely love driving."

My note to parents willing to use Polka Dot Driving School for their precious children:

The choice is YOURS to have your children taught correctly or to have your children taught incorrectly, to have your children taught in the shortest possible time with a 95% of failing or in a little longer time with a 95% chance of passing.

Only a short note to say a "big" thank you to all who left a comment. I truly love hearing from each and everyone.

I wish you all a safe and blessed journey forward and hope to hear from many more commenters.

Saturday morning I was late for a driving lesson in Retreat. The first and only that I could think of was getting there on time and my mind starting "racing".

The funny thing about that kind of situation is that it "automatically" places you in a very dangerous situation, a situation that you have full control over...fortunately!

YOU have the choice of actually driving faster than normal to "make" your appointment and deliberately placing yourself and other road users at great risk of being involved in a road accident or one where you decide that life is worth much more than being a few minutes late for an appointment and actually driving carefully.

Even though I was running late and really felt the "urge" to go faster to get there on time, I decided it was not worth the chance or risk of being involved in an accident and made a conscious decision to drive safely and carefully.

I was approx 3 minutes late and my learner understood that I was not deliberate.

I have started a campaign and I am hoping some of the more responsible drivers will join. Phoning while driving is a death trap waiting to happen. Did you know that approx 3 out of 5 drivers are busy on their cell phones while driving? I have also placed 2 huge stickers on each side of my car in this regard and believe it or not...some people have looked and continued playing on their phones while driving and others don't seem to notice. It's shocking and down right frightening.

The other day on my way home there was a lady driver behind me, she had her cell phone in the one hand and picking her nose with the other hand...my question is this, who is steering her vehicle??? Makes you think doesn't it???

It's difficult not to answer the cell when it rings while you are driving. I also know the temptation is very big to answer it but it's very dangerous. Please tell all your friends and family that when you do not answer your cell, it's because you are driving and that you will reply once your vehicle is stationary. You can also change your voice answer message to that so that they know you are not able to answer your phone at that minute.

On more than one occasion I have been overtaken by insane drivers on the painted island even though my indicators are on and driving correctly according to the rules of the road. The worst is that these drivers have the cheek to actually shout, swear and hoot at me. So far every time this happened I have nearly been bumped on my door which will leave me reasonably badly injured since the "over takers" are in huge 4 X 4 RV's.

Also, on a few occasions while my learners have been driving other road users get so impatient that they feel they have to overtake us on the right in an inter section while we have indicated and actually busy turning to the right. How insane is that??

I cannot stress the point more clearly of how dangerous these practices are to all road users. I realize that nothing I say or do will make these drivers more careful but hopefully we can keep on driving responsibly and someone might take a tip or two from this and also improve their driving skills.

It's been one year since my last blog entry....many things have happened and many lessons have been learnt.

I have learnt a few very valuable lessons since last year and have grown into a really gr8 instructor...but...that does not mean that I have no more to learn. One thing I have seen but cannot understand is fellow drivers rude behavior on our roads, especially when they spot a learner drivers vehicle.

My daughter has been training with me for a while before deciding to finally drive in town, this started off as a really fun drive which suddenly turned into a hell drive. On turning left onto Beach Road, Strand on Friday morning, 10 September 2011 we were greeted with a mother (she had her children in the car with her) from hell driving to get past the learner driving vehicle just as we started a lane change to the right hand lane...she decides to race her way past us...needless to say we, my daughter and I both got the fright of our lives pulling the little car back into the left lane.

After this we thought...ah gr8 now we can carry on, which we did and my daughter did such a gr8 job. Well, on our way back from the lesson we finally got to the intersection on the corner of the R44 and Main Road, Strand turning right onto Main Road toward Strand. While my daughter crossed the robot reaching the half way point of crossing when another reckless and in my opinion bloody stupid fool driver decides to overtake the learner vehicle on the right side of the intersection. I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted this vehicle on our right side as if it were a double lane.

This is unsafe practice and causes unwelcome stress to the learner. I urge you to PLEASE - drive with care, consider the learner driver. These are our young drivers of the South African future...this type of conduct does NOT teach anyone anything of value.

Friday, 23 September I was teaching a learners driver when, as drunk as a skunk a man appears out of the blue...." tell the woman it's the front wheels that turn and not the back wheels!!"  He turns around walks a little way and swings around, this time with a slight attitude...." the front turn, not the back wheels!!"

I was shocked out of my socks and in my mind I was asking...WHAT????????

Instructing the instructor, that was really a new one!!!

Today I went through to Philipi to look at some trees, everything went well until I was very close to my actual destination and the municipality being busy with roadworks on the Strandfontein Rd and the road being demarcated with yellow (temporary) signs to indicate where drivers should be driving, all of a sudden and out of blue a speeding driver tried to overtake my vehicle and landed in the oncoming traffics lane. He also swerved toward my side, almost knocking the signs to kingdom come and pushing me off the road into a wall on my left.

Well, needless to say I had a huge big fright and yes, I agree...he acted extremely stupid and very, very dangerously. He could have killed not only himself but also innocent people in the oncoming vehicle plus we could have been hurt and my car written off completely.

My point?...please guys
**  Get to your destination a few minutes late rather than not getting there at                      all...ever!!!

**  Take care when you drive, be conscientious, be safe and ensure your fellow                driver's safety.

I am searching through the net for all the information I can lay my hands for you and stumbled upon this site:
http://www.smartmotorist.com/driving-guideline/driving-tips-from-driving-experts.html go take a  peek and discover many ways to drive safe, be friendly with your co drivers and simply enjoy driving.

It's very easy getting in and out of a car, no one ever gives it a second thought but...have you ever wondered what the consequences can be for not checking your blindspot before actually opening the door of your car??? The answer to this is; it could be devastating.

STOP!!! and think for a split second. It actually takes a moment of your time to look back and make 100% sure that there are NO on coming vehicles before opening your car door to step out.

Stepping out of your car without checking for on coming traffic could change your life and those of other people forever.

I founded my driving school June 2010 and am new in the field of Instructing however, I have excellent driving skills, I have never had an accident in 36 years of driving, I am good at what I do and I love it.

Due to the tragic deaths of two of my children...one by my father (which was a tragic accident)  and one by a speed driver, I am    cautious & vigilant. I take it upon myself to teach learners what the dangers of speeding is and how to be safe and conscientious road users.

The loss of a child is something that changes ones life in ways that no-one can foresee.

All the information I will provide in my blog is tried and tested throughout my life and I sincerely hope that my information will encourage all the learners.
